Overview

The Ama Dablam Base Camp trek is one of the popular journeys in the Everest region of Nepal. It is the less crowded journey that serves amazing sceneries for adventure nomads. There are many adventure-filled trails to be passed while completing this journey. Travelers shall pass through numerous small traditional villages inhabited by ethnic groups including Sherpas and others.

Your journey to Ama Dablam begins with a 40–minute flight from Kathmandu or a 15-minute flight from Ramechhap to Lukla. From here, the journey continues to Phakding following the same route of the Everest Base Camp trek.

Walking past the dense forest – full of pine and rhododendron flowers/trees, along with numerous wildlife we reach Sagarmatha National Park and continue to the trek we reach the largest Sherpa town – Namche Bazaar. On the way, we shall cross Hillary Suspension Bridge along with other airy high suspension bridges, mane walls, fluttering prayer flags, and prayer wheels.

During the drek, we shall acclimatize at Namche Bazaar, the famous Sherpa town known as the gateway to Everest, which is full of trekkers from all around the planet, especially during trek season. , Namche has modern cafes, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and even bakeries and you can enjoy visiting or testing new Sherpa recipes.

From Namche Bazaar, we head towards the village of Phortse past the Khumjung, where a beautiful monastery in the east replicates a serene feel. We will go past the narrow lane beside a towering rocky face to rise up towards a large white Stupa which seemingly tends to soupçon the sky. From there, we could see the good views of Ama Dablam, and the hidden upper Hongu valley peaks. A suspension bridge across the Dudhkoshi River opens up the way to Phortse.

Leaving the village of Phortse, we move towards the village of Pangboche. We are not in a rush. We take a slow pace which helps us to be safe from Acute Mountain Sickness or any other altitude-related problems.

In the village of Pangboche, we can observe the oldest monastery in the Everest region shines with its historical importance. On the way, there are a lot of crisscrosses, and by the time we leave the main trail, we can see the footpaths cuddling narrower and narrower as we arrive close to the Pangboche.

Walking a bit further to Pangboche, we proceed towards Ama Dablam Base Camp. It is not far from Pangboche to there. The main route divides into 2- one leading to the Dingboche and the other to the base camp of Mt. Ama Dablam.

Exploring the base camp, you can enjoy remarkable panoramic mountain views of some of the highest snow-caps - including Mt Lhotse (8,416m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), Island Peak (6,189m), Lhotse (8,400m), Pumori (7,165m), Lobuche Peak (6,135m), Thamserku (6,618m), Kongde Peak (4,618m), Tawoche Peak (6,542m) and much more.

Exploring them all, we head back to Pangboche, Tengboche, Namche, and Lukla before flying back to Kathmandu and ending the trip.

When preparing for your international departure from Kathmandu, it’s essential to plan ahead to ensure a smooth experience at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). It is recommended to arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight for international departures. This allows ample time for check-in, security screening, and any potential delays. If you have already checked in online, make sure to still allow sufficient time for dropping off your baggage and reaching your gate.

Kathmandu Airport is well-equipped with various amenities, including duty-free shops, restaurants, and lounges where you can relax before your flight. Keep an eye on the departure boards for real-time updates on your flight status, as weather conditions can sometimes affect schedules. It’s advisable to check with your airline regarding any specific requirements or changes to your flight.

Upon completing all necessary procedures, you can enjoy the last moments in Nepal by soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the airport. Whether you’re reflecting on your trekking adventures or planning your next journey, this final experience will leave you with lasting memories of the stunning landscapes and rich culture of Nepal before heading back home or to your next destination.
